Basic Training Guides - Ft Knox

1. Your name (as you would like it to appear on the website): Arielle

2. Where did your soldier attend basic training? Fort Knox, KY

3. When did he attend basic training? March 08-May 15 08

4. How often did you hear from him? (Phone and letters) Received letters usually every other day and about 6 or 7 phone calls, but he had a really cool Drill Sgt that let them.

5. How long was it before you heard from him the first time? I believe it was a week that I got the first phone call. It only lasted 2 minutes if that to tell me that he was doing ok and that he got there just fine.

6. How long did it take to receive a mailing address for him? I got his address within a week

7. Were there any restrictions on what you could send him? I didn't send him much just letters and pictures. I know some other soldiers got candy.

8. Were you sent information about family day and graduation? Yes, I received the information 3 weeks prior to graduation

9. Did he have a family day? His family day and graduation were combined into one day. We were able to take him out from the time he signed out to 8pm

10. Please describe the graduation ceremony. HUGE line to get in even when we got there 1hour and a half earlier. They had a presentation of awards, presentation of colors, army song, soldier creed, and a special speaker. It lasted about 45 minutes then we were able to find our soldiers and sign them out for an all day pass.

11. Is there a website for his basic training unit? Is there a place to see pictures of his training online? Yes, but there weren't many pictures of my soldier and I think they weren't recent either.

12. Any other tips or information? Keep by the phone or have your phone with you at all times! I missed one of his phone calls and didn't get another one for at least 3 weeks! You will be extremely upset! Write everyday because its there support system and don't expect to receive many phone calls.

We are currently seeking writers to contribute about their soldier's experience during basic training. Since training, contact and the overall atmosphere can vary greatly from one basic training post to the next, I thought this would be helpful. If you would like to contribute your experience to help other Army family members, please email me this completed questionnaire. Thank you for your help!
