Basic Training Guides - Ft Leonard Wood

1. Your name (as you would like it to appear on the website):

            Dana L.

2. Where did your soldier attend basic training?

            Ft. Leonard Wood

3. When did he attend basic training?

            August 08 - October 08

4. How often did you hear from him? (Phone and letters)

I received my first phone call 2 days after he left.  Then one more at the end of reception which was a couple days later.  After he was in his company I received a phone call ever Sunday and they ranged from 10 min. (was the normal) but a couple Sundays I was able to talk a couple hours!  He mailed me letters everyday, but they were in my mailbox on 3 different days of the week.

5. How long was it before you heard from him the first time?

        2 days

6. How long did it take to receive a mailing address for him?

2 weeks, write anyway and send a ton of letters at the beginning.  It meant the world to my husband.

7. Were there any restrictions on what you could send him?

Yes, no food, aspirin, etc.  Normal stuff, you will get a letter.

8. Were you sent information about family day and graduation?

Yes, nothing big or fancy, just a one page letter.

9. Did he have a family day? If so, please describe.

Family day was wonderful! They have a ceremony in the morning and then you can take your soldier until 8pm.  The ceremony was so neat!

10. Please describe the graduation ceremony.

It was good, but family day ceremony was so much better.  Graduation was long and not very much going on for the family, more for the soldier.  Family day ceremony was much more for us.

11. Is there a website for his basic training unit? Is there a place to see pictures of his training online?

There is a website, but it was never updated.  I would keep checking anyway, you never know when you can get lucky!

12. Any other tips or information?

My husband enjoyed bct at Ft. Leonard Wood.  They all were very helpful and very family oriented.  I hope everyone has the same great experience we had. Good Luck!

We are currently seeking writers to contribute about their soldier's experience during basic training. Since training, contact and the overall atmosphere can vary greatly from one basic training post to the next, I thought this would be helpful. If you would like to contribute your experience to help other Army family members, please email me this completed questionnaire. Thank you for your help!
