Basic Training Guides - Ft Leonard Wood

1. Your name (as you would like it to appear on the website):

Rachel

2. Where did your soldier attend basic training?

Fort Leonard wood, MO

3. When did he attend basic training?

Jan 2008-april 2008

4. How often did you hear from him? (Phone and letters) it took about 2-3 weeks for him to get settled and then he would call every Sunday for 10-20 min. I usually got a letter once a week. he said there was too much you had to get done in your hour of personal time to be writing letters.

5. How long was it before you heard from him the first time?

I missed his first call which was when he got to Fort Leonard Wood saying he had arrived.

6. How long did it take to receive a mailing address for him?

He didn't send out a letter and the letter from the ds didn't come until like 3 weeks and he was dying for mail but he never gave me his address.

7. Were there any restrictions on what you could send him?

I know it said on the letter no food stuff you already knew you couldn't send him.

8. Were you sent information about family day and graduation?

Yes

9. Did he have a family day? If so, please describe.

Family day and graduation were all on one day.

10. Please describe the graduation ceremony.

We didn't go as it was too expensive and we would of had less than 10hours with him-I couldn't justify spending over $1000 for such a small amount of time

11. Is there a website for his basic training unit? Is there a place to see pictures of his training online? There was a website and for the first 4-5 weeks they updated it with pics but after that they stopped.

12. Any other tips or information?

People will tell you not to bring a cell phone but if he has one take it-because every place is different-my hubby got to use his. In the beginning they get really homesick so if you can get letters to them asap.

We are currently seeking writers to contribute about their soldier's experience during basic training. Since training, contact and the overall atmosphere can vary greatly from one basic training post to the next, I thought this would be helpful. If you would like to contribute your experience to help other Army family members, please email me this completed questionnaire. Thank you for your help!
