Your Name (if you would like it to
appear): Evelyn
Base Name: Fort Richardson
Base Location: Anchorage, Alaska
How long have you been here? (give
years please, ex. 2003-present)
We were only there for about a year in
2005
What is housing like? On-post?
(waiting list, conditions, etc.) Off-post? Any areas to stay
away from? Average price to rent or buy?
We really liked living on post. We
lived in a two bedroom, town house type. We had a big
basement and it included washer and dryer. The bedrooms
were decent sizes, it had one bathroom, which was sort of
small. The kitchen was a decent size and it had a dining
room also.
We visited several different styles on
base and they all seemed livable, I have definitely seen
worse. They had some awesome ones with garages too, but
they were 4 bedrooms I believe.
Off-post seemed very pricey to me, but
nice.
Rate the PX & Commissary.
I liked both. I would give them a 8.
Activities on base?
Honestly we were more in to drinking
while we were there, so we didn't pay much attention to what
was going on. They did have a movie theatre that we would
go to. It always smelled like Pine Sol.
Active Spouses Club?
Not sure, but they have pretty active
FRG's depending on what unit you are in.
Things to do in area?
There is a really nice mall downtown.
You have to park in a big parking deck, which is tricky to
get out of when it is icy. We also went to the State Fair,
which was nice.
School System?
Not sure, we didn't have kids then.
Any colleges in area?
University of Alaska, I believe
Jobs? (on post and off)
I was an FCC provider on post. I
made pretty good money too. They train you and help you
with materials.
Off post, I am not too sure. I worked
on post so I wouldn't have to drive in the snow.
Favorite aspect of this
base/surrounding city?
It was BEAUTIFUL! You can see the
mountains from base, you can see the Northern lights. You
also get to see moose on post quite a bit. I also loved
that it is a small base, so everyone seemed pretty close.
If I would have kids when we were
there, they have really nice playgrounds!
Least favorite aspect?
Mosquitoes, my husband's unit
(different story)
Local websites? (base, chamber,
newspaper, schools, etc.)
Any other tips?
Have fun and travel! Alaska is
beautiful!
