FORT SILL

1. Your name (as you would like it to appear on the website): Melissa

2. Where did your soldier attend basic training? Fort Sill, OK

3. When did he attend basic training? June 2007

4. How often did you hear from him? (Phone and letters) He actually got to call quite a few times. Almost once or even twice in a week. But a friend of his was at the same training but in a different platoon and barely got to call his girlfriend. It all depends on the DS. He wrote every chance he got. So I got a letter almost everyday.

5. How long was it before you heard from him the first time? He got to call when he got there but he didn’t get to call again until a week after they got started.

6. How long did it take to receive a mailing address for him? It took about two weeks to get his address.

7. Were there any restrictions on what you could send him? No food or candy. You could send hygiene products as long as it was travel size. You could send letters, cards, and pictures. If you send pictures the DS while make you open it in front of him to make sure they aren’t “bad” pictures.

8. Were you sent information about family day and graduation? Yes I got newsletters every two weeks about what they were doing and about family day and graduation.

9. Did he have a family day? If so, please describe. Yes. Family could come early in the morning. They would have you sit in a room while the DS’s speak. Then you would go outside for a presentation on what the soldiers learned during basic training. Then you would go back to the barracks where the soldiers were in formation waiting to be released. Then they could leave with you and have to be back at a certain time.

10. Please describe the graduation ceremony. First they had guest speakers. Then they honored the honor graduates. Then by each platoon the soldiers were called on to the stage to get a diploma. Then the soldiers said their creed and were sworn in.

11. Is there a website for his basic training unit? Is there a place to see pictures of his training online? No.

12. Any other tips or information? Write everyday. Always stay positive in the letters. It won’t help if he knows you aren’t doing well and there is anything he can do about it. Keep your phone always by your side because you never know when he is going to be able to call. It is so upsetting to find out you missed a call.
