11B Infantry
Your Name (as you would like it to appear): Nancy
S.
Your Soldier's MOS (please include code and
description, for example "11B Infantry") 11B Infantry
When did your soldier attend? March 07 - June 07
Where was he stationed for AIT? Basic Training and
AIT are combined into 15 weeks of training for soldiers going through
Infantry. The first nine weeks consist of Basic Training and the
remaining six weeks make up the soldiers AIT. Commonly referred to as
OSUT (One Station Unit Training), both Basic Training and AIT are
conducted at Fort Benning, GA.
How long was his AIT? OSUT (One Station Unit
Training) was comprised of 9 weeks of Basic Training, followed by 6
weeks of AIT.
What was his training like? Normal schedule? Did
he train on weekends? Late at night? Classroom or field based? My
husband trained every day from sun-up to sun-down and late into the
evenings. He trained 7 days a week and spent several days out in the
field during OSUT. The last two weeks of OSUT are called FTX in which
the soldiers spend a week in the field conducting Field Training
Exercises. The training was given in both classroom time and field
based.
Did you get to see him during AIT? No. The only
time you are allowed to see your soldier is during a 30 hr. pass given
to most soldiers after the completion of 9 weeks of Basic Training.
How often were you able to communicate with him?
By phone? Email? We were able to communicate through letters during OSUT.
I wrote to my husband every day while he was at Fort Benning. He was not
able to write as often; however, I received letters from him nearly
every day as well. He was able to call five or six times during his 15
weeks of training. Most times the conversation could only last 5-10
minutes. The soldiers and their platoon are seldom rewarded with phone
privileges.
Describe the graduation ceremony. I cannot begin
to describe the sense of joy and pride you have when you see your
soldier's graduation. The day before graduation soldiers are given a day
pass (usually 8-10 hours) to spend time with their family members off
post. The soldiers must come back that evening and stay in the barracks.
The day of graduation is one of the most exciting days! The soldiers and
family members have been waiting for 15 long weeks to finish the intense
training. The graduation is held outside on the graduation field and it
is quite a display! They use tanks, guns, and smoke to show the audience
things they have learned while attending OSUT. There is such a sense of
pride and accomplishment that can be seen on everyone's face during
graduation. The soldiers have worked 15 weeks to become.......the
INFANTRY.
Any other tips or information? No matter how busy
your life can be while your soldier is gone...write him letters as often
as possible. Letters from home are the soldier's lifeline while they are
away. To this day, my husband still talks about how receiving letters
every day made him feel. Tell them how proud you are of them and always
keep your words encouraging!
