63B Light Wheel Mechanic

Your Name (as you would like it to appear): Dana Welch

Your Soldier's MOS (please include code and description, for example "11B Infantry") 63B Light Wheel Mechanic with additional skill indicator of R4 (Styker Mechanic)

When did your soldier attend? July 2007 - Sept 2007 (AIT), Oct 2007 (ASI)

Where was he stationed for AIT? Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland

How long was his AIT? The AIT portion was 12 weeks and the ASI was four weeks

What was his training like? Normal schedule? Did he train on weekends? Late at night? Classroom or field based? The first week or so it was classwork, then the remaining 11 weeks it was split between classroom and motorpool.  He did seem to use diagnostic computers a lot in the classroom.  He would have morning PT, followed by class, and then the day would end with more PT.  They did go on a three or four day "camping" trip towards the end.

Did you get to see him during AIT?  I was about 7 hours away so I came down to visit for the weekend three different times.  I stayed at the hotel on post.  We found out after the fact that if I had had a place near by during ASI then he could have lived with me off-post during the Styker school portion because they are given perm. party status so that they can come and go off post as the please in the evenings.

How often were you able to communicate with him? By phone? Email?  We got him a cell phone after basic and he got to keep it with him so he called every evening for as long as he wanted.

Describe the graduation ceremony. Didn't go ... just drove down and picked him up afterwards.

Any other tips or information?  Just breathe deep and relax!!
