Ranger School

Ranger School is a nine week course with three phases. Soldiers holding rank of E-4 and above are eligible to volunteer. Those from one of the three Ranger BNs can attend as an E-3. Those soldiers who require medication or surveillance or who have been deemed nondeployable are not eligible to attend. Students are not required to be Airborne qualified, however, it is recommended.

Prerequisites for Ranger School include passing the Ranger APFT. This requires 49 push-ups (2 minutes or less), 59 sit-ups (2 minutes or less), 5 mile run in under 40 minutes and 6 pull-ups. The soldier must also pass a CWST (Combat Water Survival Test).

Ranger School Packing List

Communication during Ranger School is very limited. This link provides an address where you can write to your soldier during each phase. Your will most likely only hear from him between phases or if he is recycled or dropped.

When those who came from a Ranger BN graduate from Ranger School, they will return to their Ranger unit. Those who came from a non-Ranger unit, will return to their respective units upon graduation. Entry into a Ranger BN is completely separate and requires the soldier to pass RIP (Ranger Indoctrination Program) or ROP (Ranger Orientation Program).

Upon graduation, Ranger School graduates have earned the right to wear the black and gold Ranger Tab. Graduates from Ranger School are referred to as Ranger Qualified. Rangers wear the black and red scroll of their battalion as well as the Ranger tab after earning it. The saying is “The tab is a school; the scroll is a way of life.”
