My fiance and I are getting married next month and he leaves for Basic in three months… will he be able to call me often? This is going to be really hard for us we have never really been apart and we are only 18. When he’s finished with AIT will I be allowed to move with him on the base right away?? I would really like to know, it will make this whole thing easier.

How often he is able to call will depend on his basic training location, his drill sergeants and his fellow soldiers. In the Army, if one person messes up, they punish everyone. I know some who heard from their soldier at least once a week during basic training and others who were lucky to hear from them once a month. There is really no way to predict. Your main form of communication with him in basic training will be through letters.
If AIT is his last school, you will be able to move with him to his permanent duty station at that time. The only exception to this is if he gets orders to Korea. While it is possible to be able to move to Korea with your soldier, many times it is an unaccompanied tour. Barring that, you should be able to move with him at that time.
Good luck!

My current husband and I were just friends when he was in Basic. I received my first letter from him around week 2. I was really excited because I finally had an address in which to send all the letters I had been writing. He called me for the first time around week 4. They had their phones for 1-2 hours starting around 6pm on Sundays. There was one Sunday that he couldn’t call at all and one Sunday where they all got their phones taken away after only having them for 5 minutes. Don’t count on telephone calls because you will set yourself up for disappointment. It was SO awesome to see him at graduation from Basic!!!!
AIT was much more tolerable. We didn’t get to talk or text much during the day, but nights and weekends were pretty much fair game until lights out around 2130. Fortunately, I only lived 4 1/2 hours away, so I would go pick him up on weekends when he had an off-post pass. Which was every weekend.
After AIT, my honey was home for 3 weeks before he had to report to his permanent duty station. We got married, and now we are here and happy. He is away doing some training stuff for 3 weeks. We realized as soon as he arrived at training that he is in “cell hell”, so I haven’t had any communication with him in over a week. Just try to stay busy and remind yourself that he isn’t choosing not to talk to you. I wish you and your future soldier/hubby all the best.
