I have a confession to make.
I have already decorated for Christmas. I know, I know. I swore I’d hold out until the day after Thanksgiving. Then I was sorting through clothes, moving winter clothes into closets and summer clothes into storage. Well, as long as MyHero and I were shifting things around storage we may as well pull the Christmas decorations out… Right? Then I said “I’m just going to sort through this stuff to remind myself what we have; if I see anything cute on sale I’ll know if I should pick it up”. Hahaha Needless to say, decorations went up that day. That *might* have been two weekends ago. Maybe.
The only thing we haven’t done is decorate our tree. The past few years we’ve used a table top tree because of time and space issues. This year I wanted a full sized one. I picked it up this past payday and we’ll decorate it this weekend. Tonight the boys and I spent some time making our very own ornaments. It was so much fun I thought I’d share.
Here’s the recipe:
1 cup of flour
1 cup of salt
2ish cups of water
Mix the flour and salt. Add one full cup of water and mix. Slowly add the remainder of the water, only until the mixture is wet enough to stick together. I think I only used approximately 1/4 of that second cup of water.
I turned it out onto a floured surface where the boys used a rolling pin to roll it flat (I’d estimate they were approximately 1/8″ thick, but you can play with that). Don’t be afraid to flour things up, so it doesn’t stick. We had to experiment with that until we found the right combination. I kept using too little and couldn’t get the dough off the table.
The boys used cookie cutters to cut out shapes. Because we are kind of wacky in addition to Santa, Elves, and Rudolph shapes we also had ghosts, bats, and pumpkins. Haha That’s how we roll. We used toothpicks to draw definition on the ornaments, and a straw to poke a hole at the top with which to hang them on the tree. Then we baked them at 325* for approximately an hour (time varies by oven and thickness of the ornaments).
I made a second batch and cut out stars and circles which I am thinking about using ribbon to tie to packages as gift tags.
They have to cool completely- thank goodness we did this in the evening so the boys will be in bed before the ornaments come out of the oven- and will be ready to decorate tomorrow. In addition to those we’re going to use the cookie cutters to draw shapes onto felt pieces, cut those out, and use them for ornaments as well.
I’m sending you all warm wishes, and please stay safe.
