Scam: Pretending to Be a Soldier

I have a few concerns and i need to know if my gut instinct is telling me the right thing, before someone i care for ends up seerioulsy hurt or scammed for money she doesn’t have. My sister has been speaking with a guy who is in the army and is apparently a sargent. He has been telling her that he will be coming to see her when he can get a leave. Also, she should be getting a verification number shortly from the base , and then she will be gettting his leave money as he has put her down as his next of kin. this money will not be in a cheque form as the army has to be careful of fraud. therefore they will be using western union for the transaction. I have tried to tell my sister this all sounds like a hoax, but she is falling for this MIKE guy fast. He apparently has 2 children who attend a boarding school. I can not for the life of me , see how this so called sargent would want to give up his life long ambition in the army to be the boyfriend of a woman who he has never personally met. Do you have any insight to this concern. if my thoughts are true, how do i break this news to her.
Look forward to hearing from you SOON.

Sister caught up , Lizziebeth

This is a scam. There is no transfer of funds when they go on leave. The Army pays for their leave during a deployment. They will pay for them to travel to any destination they choose. The only requirement is that they fly back to the combat zone from the same location. I’m sorry.

I have a question, that is a concern to me, my sister who lives in colombia, south america, received an email from this guy claiming to be sargent in afghanistan, that was last month. now he says that he is getting out , time to retire, and he will come to see her in Colombia.
Then he sends her another e-mail saying that he got some monies, that some of his friend got to share, and he needs to send that money to his family, wife or ??? and since his wife died in an accident, and his son is still a minor, and his parents are dead, the only person he trust is my sister, who doesnt even speak english, been comunicating with the help of google translate.
He said he has 600.000 to send, via United Nations diplomatic Mail, and be coming under the impresion of being his belongins and that she is his wife….. he even sent his passport photo and his military Id copy to her, and asked her for some personal information… question, do military, get to share this large amount of monies, after they serve overseas.

i have a couple of questions. my bf states he is still in the army and just recently moved from Ft Hood to Germany. he says that back in Aug he got orders for a secret mission to deploy to Syria, (still states he is Delta) but he wont tell me awhole lot. i asked my friend to find him on ako and there are 2 guys with his name, but neither are his rank that he is stating he is. so i asked him for his ako email and he says that it is private and that he doesnt have it to where it is public. Is this possible? he has never asked me to send money and we always use yahoo messenger or we call each other. He now states that when he is trying to call me that the towers are down. is this possible too? And if he is in Germany can you use an american phone number? how can i found out if any of this is true!!

These are all scams. I am talking to a guy who also claims to be a seargent in the military. His name is David Bassey. He found me in facebook. Coicindently, he found my sister out in Puerto Rico as well. LOL!! He didnt know we were related and one day, my sister and I got to talking and found out we were both talking to the same guy. At first, we thought he was just a player. Trying to have diffrent girlfriends. I brought it up to his attention and he told me he was only interested in me, that him writing my sister was just a social thing and that he would stop. I didn’t write him for months. Then one day he Facebooks me and tells me he cant get me off his mind and all this other nonsense. Anyway, we kept talking, but I already knew it wasn’t going anywhere romantically because I didn’t trust him. Guess what he does next? this took him months, after befriending me, he tells me that he has a large amount of money that he wants to send me because he has no family and I’m the only person he trusts. LOL! Mind you, he hasn’t even heard my voice on the phone, let alone met me in person, just Facebooking. I was like, why would you send me such a large amount of money, $850.000.000, LOL, I knew this was a scam but get this, he wanted me to send this supposedly security company from London, $683 so that they could relaese the funds to me. Charges for shipping and handling and for holding his money. Can you believe this dude?? Bottom line, there are many scams going on with men pretending to be US soldiers. I don’t know what the FTC is going to do but something has to be done. By the way, whomever wants to report a fraud, the place to do it is the FTC, https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ this is the Federal Trade Commission. I hope this helps you guys out there. Please ladies, do youself a favor, do not send anyone any money that you haven’t met personally and even then, you shoudn’t be giving you money away to men. Hope this helps someone.

I reported my situation to actionfraud.police.uk as I have been a victim too. I suspected my soldier guy and after three weeks and finding himself photos platered over internet dating sites today, same photos he had sent me but using different names, dob, country of residence etc. i gave him money too. I phoned them and they were very helpful, they took a full report and it will be sent to the met police in london fraud team and investigated within a month. My soldier claimed to be US army. I gave police every little piece of information i had obtained on this guy but they don’t take photos and emails online so they said they would send local police around to my home if they required them. I have already confronted my con man who was most angry that I had sussed him out and reported him, but he deserved it, he lied, deceived and broke my heart not to mentioned stole money from me. Please report this. i also reported it to the online dating agency I was with and they confirmed he was already under investigation by them as other women had complained too.

    I have a couple of questions :
If US soldier in Afghanistan find money during their mission, does their team leader have the right to share part of the money among the soldiers went for war ?
Are they allowed to keep cash in the camp ?
Can they send money through Western Union in Afghanistan in cash by themselves ?

    • Stacey July 17, 2013, 1:31 pm

Think about what you’re asking. They are NOT allowed to keep what they find during missions.

  • Donna October 14, 2013, 11:06 am

    Ladies,

I thought I would share my experience with you all. Please watch out for General Giorgio Battisti (the scammer is using this Italian General’s identity – you can Google the real General Giorgio Battisti – he is actually a very prominent individual). His SKYPE name is: gen_giorgio_battisti and his email address is:generalgiorgibatti@yahoo.com. I have been chatting with this scammer for about 6 weeks now. He said wants to retire, marry me and we live happily ever after and oh he wants me to help him retrieve his briefcase with millions of $$ in it stored in one of the UN’s warehouses in ACCRA, GHANA. He said he wants his money so, he can buyout his contract with the UN and come live with me. When “A briefcase full of money, Accra and Ghana are used in one sentence – then you know it’s a SCAM, this guy is obviously not very smart. Two weeks later after our first chat, he asked me to help facilitate the delivery of his briefcase to me. He asked me to send the “diplomat delivery guy” an email asking for instructions on how and when I should have the briefcase delivered to me. The delivery is free, but I need to pay for the processing of the documents so the briefcase can be released and delivered to me. FAT CHANCE! So I strung him along and made him believe that I am interested and want to fall in love and marry him. I knew he was a scammer but I led him to believe that I want to help him get “our” money. So I kept asking him for all kinds of information and really challenged him. We’ll today he got pissed off at me because I asked him for his “unclassified” military email address, the name, phone number and address of his diplomat friend so I can check his credibility and I asked to video chat with him. I also told him that I can help him but he needs to send me the money to pay for everything, but he said he doesn’t have access to his account because he is currently in Afghanistan. He asked why I wouldn’t trust him – like DUH!! Bottom line is don’t fall for someone who sends romantic notes and said he loves you and wants to spend the rest of his life with you and be his “QUEEN” after three days of chatting online. This guy also uses all the information about the real General Giorgio Battisti (he is a public figure), so you would think you are talking to the real General.

I have been trying to research a way of notifying the real General Giorgio Battisti that someone is using his identity. Any ideas?

    • Mira Loncarevic March 19, 2015, 6:22 am

I was chatting with the same fake general a few day ago. I too wanted to notify the real general Battisti that somebody is using his identity. This is what I could find: Until November 2014 he was the commander of NRDC-ITA, and left to hold the post in the Italian General Staff as Inspector of Infrastructure Army. The only possible way to reach him and notify him is to email NRDC-ITA Public Affairs Office staff@paonrdc.it.

  • Kay September 12, 2014, 2:33 am

Hello Lizzebeth, I have been emailing a soldier name Mike, he said that he needs money for a replacement to come home, so he could marry me. It could be the same person

    • Cynthia G January 27, 2016, 9:41 pm

Hi, I have been talking to a man and he’s supposed to be in the Army also. We’ve set and texted for hours. His name is Caleb Brown. And his CO’s name is Mike Robertson. I know his name because I was to sign some papers and send $850:00 so Caleb could get home to me. I didn’t send money.Mike who I believe to be the same person kept contacting me about how upset this Caleb was because I didn’t trust him. Needless to say he tried to turn it around on me by saying I didn’t believe in Caleb, are him.If I did I would get him home. Just 850 he said and promised I would get the money back once he made it home. I said no and cut all ties. Some way he got my email I had changed. I got a text saying that he was going to be honest with me. His name was Joshua and he wanted me to know Caleb had been shot.It was back to money. I shut everything off. I had to start over. I’ve been looking all over the internet men in Army pictures, Scammers, Please, What can I do to find this Caleb in the pictures I have? My life got messed up because I was thinking of this man 247. If nothing else. Just to let him know that his ID is being used.
      Thanks, C.G.

  • Anonymous November 1, 2014, 8:13 pm

I have been talking to a man who is in the army (or so I think) he hasn’t requested money or anything. We used to email a few times a day, then down to maybe twice a day. He sent plenty of pictures, and even had an APO address. I sent a care package, but apparently he never received it. Then like a few months ago he just stopped responding. He called me once, and left a voicemail, but other than that, nothing. I tried to add him on skype, which he claims to use, but never got anything back. Is this a scam or just a flaky soldier?

    • lisa December 14, 2014, 10:17 am

Maybe he’s busy, just keep your eyes open. Anytime they ask for money, no matter how long it takes then they are fake. I had a man ask me to send a gift for his commander so he would let him go home for leave. Don’t send anything!!!Please educate yourself on rank insignia and the different military branch uniforms. The more you know the faster you can tell if they are fake.

  • jennifer hood November 17, 2014, 11:20 am

I was foolish enough to fall for one of these scams with someone claiming to be a Sgt Nicholas Swift Fowler sationed in Nigeria. In my foolishness I have sent him a small amount of money. But here is my problem now. I received a email yesterday stating at it was almost time for the deployment to be done and that I had been added as Nick’s beneficiary, they needed some of my info to finish processing the paperwork, the info they needed was my full name, which he already had, my social security number, which like an idot I gave to them, my work and home phone numbers, and both my work and home addresses. Well today I have received another email asking if I would like to receive his benefits in cash or in my bank account. I realized last night as soon as I had done this that it was a scam because I went back and looked at the paperwork and at the email addresses but now I am worried because they have my social security number and I am afraid he may have my bank account info, what do I do from here.

    • lisa December 14, 2014, 10:12 am

Set up a password with your bank ASAP. Tell them that nothing is to come or go with your account without your password. Persoanlly i would get a new SS#, tell them it was stolen. Change your phone number at home, its easy and free. For the work number you are stuck unless they start to bother you at work then you will need to tell your boss. As well as the addresses, you are stuck unless you want to move. Any mail that comes to you from him (them) just return it to the sender unopened, writing clearly on the unopened envolope ( return to sender, person no longer lives here, address unknown)

Has anyone been in communication with a guy that claims to be a 57 year old widower of 4 grown children, 3 grandchildren. Says his name is Mark Bertram and is a peace keeper currently serving in the Sudan. Good looking guy and starts out real sweet and innocent. Looking for his new love but doesn’t want to get hurt. Well everything was going good until he now says that their package store burned down and they have no mail service and he is out of food. Forget sending any kind of care package, he tells me I have to send some $250 or do I want to see him go hungry and starve. REALLY? The face of the man in the pictures I have will forever be in my mind but we talked of truth and honesty early in and I feel deep in my soul this ……….. lied to me from the get go.

    • Mel May 15, 2015, 2:21 pm

Sounds very similar to the one I talk to….Peace Keeper….funny how he used that position with me..this guy needs to be stopped. I read all the above and the stories are all so the same.

    • Valerie May 15, 2016, 12:13 am

Yes, he found me on Tinder. I sent him my phone number to text. As soon as I mentioned that my friend was was having problems with some soldier who wanted her to pick up a package at the post office and I told her it was most likely a scam, I didn’t hear from him again. Your post was over a year ago. He’s still at it.

  • Ginny April 22, 2015, 12:22 am

I have been chatting with a guy for 6 weeks now. Claims he is deployed in Syria. Everything was going well for weeks until the dreaded conversation came around. He has a package with a security company in London ( from when he was deployed there with the UN no less), and because he is in Syria needs to have the package delivered to me, this contains money and documents. No problem I said at first until he tells me a few days later they need $1400 in storage and delivery fees. Having done my research I discover that UK phone #’s starting with 441 are rerouted to Nigeria. Thank God for your site which I read after talking to him for a couple of weeks, I was so prepared for this. He never got a dime from me. I then called the Army who has Dept’s specifically for this kind of complaint who told me we do not have any bases in Damascus or even in Syria, period. You provide an extremely valuable service warning women of the scams out there. I have deliberately not posted his name on here because he does have my home address but if anyone else has talked to a guy named Mark, who according to scam type lost his parents when he was a child, lost his wife and was left with 2 small children in Military School, please post a comment. My main concern now is that from all the photos he sent me there is a genuine soldier out there whose identity has been stolen, I wish I could warn him. Sorry for the long, long message

    • Stephanie August 20, 2015, 7:17 pm

Oh my! Thank you so much for I am now talking to a guy who says he is stationed in Damascus Syria. He has asked me for my mobile phone and I told him I do not have one. I also told him when he asked for my home address…I told him I gave that to him before and yes I did (1 time ONLY) he got a small amount from me and he had me sent the money through moneygram to a guy in the states of ND and that guy can send it to him overseas. I just asked him today after reading all these stories about having his ako email address and his reply was. What did I need that for? I said to him will if something happens to me they have a way to get a hold of you if they could not get to you through yahoo. Needless to say he never did give me one. He kept asking me if I trusted him. Now I am reading all these comments of how these guys are saying they are sending money to people they trust here in the states and let alone this guy which by the way he is going by the name Andrew Byrne and he has a son who is going to be 8 this month and he also had told me it is just him and his son. Both parents pasted away…his wife had (but he used the word”has) cancer of breast, but died in an accident on her way home from a co-worker’s wedding party. So when he asked me for money again; this is when I started to do more research, because he asked if I could also write to his commander to get him to get an urgent leave and I would have to pay for him to come home. And yes of course to meet me. But I did research and then I asked him if there was a way for Red Cross to pay his urgent leave since I don’t have the money to fork over for him to come to the states…he never gave me the information to where I suppose to write at nor asked about getting money from me to get him home. Now he asked again and this time I started asking him if he could help me out, by telling him my car needed repairs and that i needed money to get things paid here. I do save all the IMs and emails and I don’t think he realizes that I do this because he kept saying I promise and I told him I did no such thing and as for him being a single parent you would understand what I am going through…then I left him saying I needed to go because I was getting sick and left it like that.

I have been chatting with a military man for a month now. He could charm the birds off the trees. Now he wants my social security number. Wants to retire as his good friend was shot down last night. He said he told them he wants to retire because of me. Yes he wants to marry right away. Wow. I must be stupid. Asked him for his military address and he said he’s under contract and does not have one. He claims to be German and he is not a us citizen. Has anyone heard these lines before. Help

I’ve just recently started talking to a sergeant stationed in Syria by the name of Nick Torres. Says he likes to fish, has a 6 year old daughter and is a widow who lost his wife about a couple of years ago. Met him on plenty of fish. Sound familiar?

I’m talking to a Nicholas Torres as well that I met on Plenty of Fish. He seems to say all of the right things and leaves me a poem every morning . I have been chatting with someone who claims that he is in the U.S. army for 22 years and wants this to be his last deployment. He said he’s in Somalia and is a pilot there. It all started on Tinder a few weeks ago. Then Facebook, the Skype. The babes and angels started coming out. I insisted on video messaging and he kept saying that he can only text on the social networks. His setup – married, wife died 2.5 years ago in a car accident. Lives in San Francisco and his daughter is with a full-time nanny in SF Funny though, tinder gps’d him nearby to me in New York vicinity and then the next day, it showed that he was over 5,000 miles away. He said he was in NY and then had to go to his last deployment. Tinder continued to say “swiping in NY”. His Skype has a New Jersey city listed and the time on it is in GMT, so.nothing was really matching up. Anyway, he kept asking that I send him a phone so that he can chat less and do video skyping. I wasn’t having it, so then he threw a very childish hissy fit about it. Then he proceeded to send me those posters with those cute lovable quotes. I finally got rid of him tonight. I beat him at his own game but Incase you would like to know what name he is using, Eric Richard and I also found him under another profile using Richard Erick on Facebook. I should have been a detective ! It’s a shame. I feel bad for the pics of the guy that he is pretending to be. Too bad none of it was true. I fell in lusy with the guy in the pics. lol

I’ve been chatting with a Army Man by the name of Rusty Church he claims to be. A Master Sergeant from Clarkesville, GA. Stationed in N.Y. but currently in West Africa, Nigeria to be exact. He claims to have an 8 year old daughter Named Lori who is being cared for by his 85 year old elderly grandmother Elizabeth. He claims to be the only child of an American Father and A Maylasian woman. He claims to have a late wife of 5 years who he lost to cancer, He has made so many mis steps in his story but I haven’t let on that I’ve been keeping track… But come on now mama didn’t raise no fool. I was just having fun with the whole thing up until he stated that Lori and Grandma were hungry and had no food and could I please help them by sending $200.00 . He claimed that he has no money and will not get paid until his job there is done. I’d hate to think of an elderly lady and a young child starving. Out there in Clarkesville, GA so someone please check on that. My gut is saying it’s all a lie but, my heartstrings are saying what if. Other than that I know that soldiers have access to their banks and get paid monthly. He has sent a couple pictures even a picture holding a piece of paper that says
I WANT U TO TRUST ME TRISHA. That one was kinda weird. He has the ability to text from his phone but says it doesn’t have calling, also I have called it and I get a message stating that the text now customer is not available, it doesn’t say that calls are unavailable. I have spoken to him tho very briefly tho he speaks poor broken English and has a very foreign accent, His writing is also poor and often reads and if he’s doing a lot of cut and pasting. He has no Southern Accent at all… Not even a hint of a southern accent, I did a trace on his phone and it shows up as a Tennessee number, but now a days it’s common to have a cell phone from a different state, and he claims of wanting to live in Tennessee upon returning home to the states. I’ve asked him for his mailing address and he hasn’t given it only asks what it is that I want to send. I would think that being away from home he would welcome any type of letter/parcel. Anyways I told him to give me a few days so I could come up with some money to send Gma and Lori and today he gave me this
    Name:Umunna favour
    Country:Nigeria
    State:Lagos
    City:Ikeja
    Zip code:23401
    Text Question:Who care
    Answer: Trisha
Says he wants me to send the $ to him so he can add $ to it and send it all at once, cause gma doesn’t get around very well.. Lol remember He said he didn’t have access to his money. Oh well! So after reading a few articles o, here and making a report with the military I decided to as Master Sergant Rusty Church one last question: I’ve asked him to email me his mailing address… Its about 8:am there October 3 2015 He should be up and about shortly, I will let you know how it goes.

I have a coworker who has been talking with this guy for about two months that claims to be in the army. He found her through Facebook. First he tells her he is in the army then he’s a contractor for the army station in Syria looking for Isis. Now he’s in Africa training snappers. OK at first he couldn’t talk to her because he dropped his cell while going up a mountain hunting Isis. But now that he’s in Africa she has sent him several care packages that consist of cookies, cadies a t shirt a laptop total of two blue tubes he left the fist one in the Humby and some took it so she sent him another one. All of this within a few weeks of knowing him. He told her he have a big ranch home /land in Colorado with a basketball court that sprite (not coke cola com) had put in because he’s so good at basketball that wanted sponsor him but he chose to join the army. He also has a half of tennis court and as so much money that he don’t know what to do with it. Said he’s divorced both parents dead his only sister is in prison for the rest of her life cause she was a drug kingpin. The only other relatives are cousins that lived in Paris try that was until it got bombed a few weeks ago now all of them is gone. She have sent him her kids names and pics even though they are grown. He asked her for $2800 so he could by back his mother land that was tied up in probate court but is now cleared she said she didn’t. Now she’s sending him some more care packages that consist of more cookies t-shirts underwear and a pair of Sanders call Jesus shoes. She’s head over heels in love with this person has never met only her his voices a few times and that was why he wanted the laptop so they could skype or face time but now he’s so top secret that he’s not allowed to do this. She says he have an accent that she have a hard time understanding it and even when texting her she has a time figuring that out but he suppose to be from the US. He goes by that name Alex Stone. And when she sends him anything she has to send it in another person name and he the give it to him. He suppose to be getting out in February that’s when they gonna get married he only going to let her work for a few months after that then he’s going to take care of her and they’re to travel the world.

1 received a friend request from a James galbraith. Stationed in afghanistan. Within 24 hrs talking about marrying me as soon as his mission is over. He fell in love with my eyes. I am recently widowed.. asked him what nationality he is and reply was christian. Too many errors and very poor use of the English language. The picture of James Galbraith is sharp but the person texting me is not.

  • Jaquelyn February 16, 2016, 9:19 am

I, too have been scammed. This guy’s name is Sgt. Gary Scar. Gary M Scar. Says he’s deployed in Kabul Afghanistan. Has 8 year old son attending boarding school in Washington. Finished college in Dorchester, uk. Asked for money. I fell for him. What a charmer. Every thing a woman wants to hear. I believed him.
What made me believe him is i got all these pictures of him and his son. Then I asked for a recent picture. Boom he sends me one with uniform and a big project board with i love you Jaquelyn. How do they get pictures that. He sent me a picture of his room. Just a plywood box. I really believed him. I asked for his APO and military email said he can’t use it. I traced his phone number and our texts were coming from New York. He has called me twice. He voice didn’t sound like it matched his picrures. He had a very heavy accent. I questioned him about it and replied that our country is able to communicate with the world using any phone number. After calling him out he still denies it and says he is a God fearing man. I truly could have waited for him.But most of all I cannot get over the pictures. It all seemed so real. I finally told him I can’t do this any more and was even nice to i hope he’ll be safe where ever life leads him.

After reading all of these comments I am concerned that I have been scammed! If anyone knows of or has been talking to a Sargent major Allen Gordon 49 from ma,Boston please let me know! I have sent him money!I sent the money to his diplomat in Ghana. His diplomats name is Gabriel.
    Thanks

  • Margie March 12, 2016, 12:57 pm

No, this is not true! There is no money involved. Only a soldier can make a request for leave or replacement. No civilian can do this…not a wife or girlfriend. And there is NO money involved! I just went through the same thing. Ask him to send you an email from his .mil (military email account). Every soldier has one. If he can’t or won’t or puts up a big stink about it, he is not a real soldier!
