Ft Knox Army Post Review

Last Updated on August 9, 2019

Your Name (if you would like it to appear):  Cynthia

Base Name:  Fort Knox

Base Location:  Kentucky

How long have you been here? (give years please, ex. 2003-present):  2004 – 2006

What is housing like? On-post? (waiting list, conditions, etc.) Off-post? Any areas to stay away from? Average price to rent or buy?  Housing for Officer’s were very old (some circa 1950), some very spacious, some mid-size,  new housing was being built as we were leaving – very nice 2 story, with garages, 3-4 bedrooms.

Rate the PX & Commissary.  On a scale of 1-10;  both rate about a 7.  Pricing for food – very reasonable.  PX was on the smaller side; however, neat, well organized and food court has approximately 6 different eateries.

Activities on base?  Lots of stuff for kids, bowling, water park, movies …….

Active Spouses Club?  Officers Wives Association and Enlisted Wives Associations

Things to do in area?  Not much:  surrounding town of Radcliff – nothing to do at all. There is a very, very small movie theater and every fast food joint you can think off – the city of Radcliff just got an Applebees in 2006, Oh I almost forgot Wal-mart!!!  For a better selection of shopping, restaurants, and other family outings – take a trip to Louisville (approximately a 40 minute drive).  Going in the opposite direction (approximately 15 minutes away) there is the city of Elizabethtown (called E-Town by the locals), there is a mid-size mall, Barnes and Noble, Target, several restaurants, and a bigger movie theatre (8 screens).  Not a very huge town, but a quick escape, that does not require a lot of travel time.

School System?  Walker Elementary is where our kids went – fantastic staff, teachers, a guidance counselor (Mrs. French – is absolutely the BEST)

Any colleges in area?  Elizabethtown Community College, Easterrn Kentucky University, University of Louisville, Spaulding University,

Jobs? (on post and off)  NOTHING on post – completely taken by the locals.  I traveled for a while to Louisville and then obtained a management position at a local bank right in the City of Radcliff.  Elizabethtown has more to offer in the way of employment – just depends on what you’re looking for.

Favorite aspect of this base/surrounding city?  Very friendly, family oriented post –

Least favorite aspect? There’s really nothing to do in the surrounding city of Radcliff – and it’s pretty run down.  I did hear that there’s been some major improvements since we left ………..

Local websites? (base, chamber, newspaper, schools, etc.)  The Turret (base newspaper) it’s also on-line.
