5. How is housing? On-post? Off-post? New housing is available for enlisted and officers on post. A lot of the older housing has been renovated. Housing has tons of free activities (cooking classes, games, yard of the month, etc)every month. Off-post, Hinesville has some good choices. Richmond Hill(25 minutes) and Savannah (45 minutes) also have more upscale choices.
6. Rate the PX and Commissary. PX is acceptable. There is Starbucks, Arby’s, Taco John’s, Anthony’s Pizza and Charlie’s grilled subs in the PX Food Court. Burger King, Popeyes Chicken as well as Marco’s Pizza and chinese dine-in.
7. Are there activities on post? Is there lodging on post? Lots of activities on post. Read the post newspaper (The Frontline, available at the PX and library), and sign up for the monthly housing activities and you’ll be all set. Also, look up the numerous FB pages such as Get Outta the House Fort Stewart. PWOC and MCCW are both VERY active and fun. They are the christian women’s care groups.
8. What is there to do in the area? Hinesville (the closest town) is quiet.
9. Rate the school system. On-Post is pre-k through 6th grade. There are several good, private schools off post. There is a big Homeschooling group here as well.
10. Are there colleges in the area? Please list. Savannah Tech, Georgia Southern, Armstrong Atlantic
11. How is the job situation? What types of jobs are in the area for spouses?Unsure
12. Favorite aspect of the post and surrounding area? Weather during the winter months is very pleasant.

13. Least favorite aspect? The bugs

    5. How is housing? On-post? Off-post? There is newer housing available to higher enlisted or those with at least children (I believe one of the children has to at least be of school age in order to qualify for a 3 bedroom). There are older neighborhoods – North and South Bryan, Isenhower Terrace & Isenhower Village that I am aware of. Some of the older housing has been renovated – new carpet and linoleum floors, some new appliances, etc. My husband and I do not have any children, so we were placed in an older neighborhood. Luckily we were placed in a home that has had renovations and that is on a quiet street. I’m not familiar with off-post housing, however from what I have seen in Hinesville, I am happy to be living on post.

    6. Rate the PX and Commissary. Commissary is good. Meats are definitely less expensive than what you would be able to purchase in Food Lion or Kroger. It’s also convenient, as it takes so long to get off post due to speed limit restrictions. PX is just okay. I feel that they are overpriced, so I am willing to go off post to the Walmart that is a few miles away from the gate.

    7. Are there activities on post? Is there lodging on post? We are not familiar with any activities on post, yet. There’s lodging on post, however since we were able to move immediately into our home, we did not have to use on-post lodging.

    8. What is there to do in the area? Hinesville is the closest town, and it doesn’t have too much. There are the basic necessities – Walmart, a few grocery stores, Big Lots, automotive stores, etc. They also have a lot of fast food restaurants, a Chili’s and Applebees are pretty close as well.

    9. Rate the school system. Unsure, we have no children.

    10. Are there colleges in the area? Unsure. I take classes online.

    11. How is the job situation? What types of jobs are in the area for spouses? Not too great. The few jobs that are available are tough to get interviews for, and it seems that many employers that are off-post are reluctant to hire a military spouse (due to PCS’s, deployments, etc.)

    12. Favorite aspect of the post and surrounding area? Weather is beautiful so far.

    13. Least favorite aspect? I wish that there was more to do in surrounding areas. Seems like the closest place is Savannah (around a 45 minute drive.. but seeing that it takes around 30 minutes to get out of Fort Stewart, it’s not as bad of a drive as it seems).
